Barb Wilkie's EHN Website
Last updated 2008

EHN Board President Barb Wilkie was very ill from chemically-induced kidney disease for several years. She passed away May 31, 2011. EHN presents this site both as a tribute and as valuable information. Many links and references will be out of date but Barb's research holds up over time. We will be transferring the site page by page, with updated details, to EHN's main site. If you would like to reach an EHN staff person, please contact us directly.

FDA: Do YOUR Duty . . .
Shine some light on the business of beauty!

From the FDA's site, Authority Over Cosmetics
[BW's opinion: in word only; not in deed.]
"Who is responsible for substantiating the safety of cosmetics?
"Cosmetic firms are responsible for substantiating the safety of their
products and ingredients before marketing. Failure to adequately
substantiate the safety of a cosmetic product or its ingredients prior
to marketing causes the product to be misbranded unless the
following warning statement appears conspicuously on the
principal display panel of the product's label:
'Warning--The safety of this product has not been determined.' (21 CFR 740.10)" (http://www.fda.gov/Cosmetics/GuidanceComplianceRegulatoryInformation/ucm074162.htm)

The above paragraph is the reason EHN filed the Citizens' Petition
with the FDA in May 1999. Petition 99P-1340 has since died an unnatural death.
Thank you for all of your support of EHN's FDA Citizens' Petition 99P-1340.

Check the analyse: http://ehnca.org/www/FDApetition/analysis.htm
More harmful chemicals than just phthaltes were found.
See how much is NOT known about all of the chemicals used to concoct
flavors and fragrances you use and or inhale into your system daily.

Remember, fragrances are derived from petrochemicals
and enter the bodies of users and nonusers through
absorption and inhalation. If you are one of the millions of people
who are adversely affected by fragrances, please provide
a public record. Inform the FDA at consumer "at" fda.gov

This site is one of two homes of the
1999 EHN FDA Petition, with analyses, contact information,
sample letters and complementary information.

05/03 2001 is a wrap for The NEW REACTOR.
The New Reactor is in hiatus. VERY SORRY about this.
If "FRAGRANCE-FREE" events could be just that, maybe my health and the health of
others involved would hold. But, of course, fragrance-FREE calls for the
co-operation and kindness of strangers and education of the harmful effects of
flavors and fragrances by the US Food and Drug Administration.

July 17, 2009: It still ain't happening! That is, the FDA is still not informing the public.

Dear Visitors:

EHN's site is deliberately kept "fancy-free" so our EI/MCS community members can more easily use it ... and I can more easily handle the workload.

For those of you who feel you must see credentials before believing what you see on a website: I'm a wife, mother, grandmother and formerly gainfully employed. I earned an AA, while working and raising three kids. I understand that an AA in this day and age means little, but it means a lot to me. My favorite studies included Political Science and Anthropology.

When I was forced into early retirement, I vowed to make as much good information available to the public as was humanly possible for me. . . .
