      Fragrance-free Workplace Policy

"To help promote a healthier and more enjoyable work place, the management team
and space committee have put together a department policy regarding the use of fragrant
      products. ..."

      STATEMENT OF POLICY
"We recognize that exposure to strong scents and fragrances in the environment can cause
discomfort, as well as directly impact the health of some individuals. Since we hope to
support a healthful environment for employees, physicians, and visitors, it is the intent
of Quality and Operations Support to strive for a fragrance-controlled workplace.
Therefore, for the comfort and health of all, use of scents and fragrant products by QOS
employees, other than minimally scented personal care products, is strongly
      discouraged.

      "APPLIES TO:
      "All employees ..."

Well, this is a bit of a crock, based on my personal experiences, including Nov. 2004.
Believe me, I've tried to track this down and the number of Kaiser people who don't know about it is
really something. The other response I've gotten time and again, is "OH, we have a fragrance-free
policy, we're not to wear more than a modicum of scent." Let me assure you, I've assured the
individuals in the Patient Services section that there is no such thing as a fragrance-free policy
in which a modicum of scent is allowed. When one chooses to use mainstream industry's
petrochemical-derived fragrances, one pollutes not only their body, but the bodies of others
because they pollute the air for all.

And, in update, I will definitely add my assault by perfume experience in nephrolgy/Pulmonary
department of the main Oakland Kaiser hospital on July 26, 2005.

    Kidney Disease (aka Renal Failure)

Barb's story -- Wilkie Wages War on Kidney Disease -- has moved to its own section. Those
who wish to follow and learn with me, please click here to go to section kidneybw.htm.
    http://ehnca.org/www/ehnlinx/kidneybw.htm

Following a visit to a nephrolgist inApril 2006, I turned to hubby and stated, Hey, kidney failure
    is
a win-win for pharmachology, and the medical industry and its docs.

The only treatment they can suggest is their drugs, which as I've already experienced, will make
me sick. As I don't want to "do drugs" they want to wash their hands of me. Not look for safer
means of getting the blood pressure down -- kidney disease causes high blood pressure and
then they are all convinced that high blood pressure accelerates kidney failure. Not look for safer
means of postponing the inevitable: dialysis and/or premature death.

Take drugs, which process through the kidneys, POSSIBLY causing more rapid kidney failure --
where's the proof that the drugs don't hasten kidney failure? Then go on dialysis and then
transplant and soak up the big bucks in drugs. What a deal. For the medical doctors and industry.
    For pharmaceuticals.

If the patient doesn't see eye to eye with the prescribed plan of dealing with kidney failure, tell
patient you can't help them because you only know what you know. Then, stultify patient.
    Beautiful!

So that was April and now it's June 2006 and I still feel asymptomatic for kidney failure, but still
treat my diet as if I have severe kidney failure . . . And now a friend sends a link to this information:

    Medical Guesswork
    BusinessWeek's cover story, MAY 29, 2006
"From heart surgery to prostate care, the health industry knows little
about which common treatments really work
    "
"...What's required is a revolution called "evidence-based medicine," says Eddy, a
heart surgeon turned mathematician and health-care economist. ..."
And, evidence based kidney information is what I try to give via Wilkie Wages War ... -- barb
    http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/06_22/b3986001.htm

    And for those into PodCasts:
    http://www.businessweek.com/mediacenter/podcasts/cover_stories/covercast_05_18_06.htm

By the bye, Kaiser does not cover my holistic treatments, nor do they refer me out.
Therefore, not one of the tests or treatments done outside of Kaiser is covered by
Medicare. They would be if I were a "regular" patient. Just think, I worked all those years,
getting poisoned in an office just so I can spend money now for treatments that other
folks depend on Medicare to cover. Ain't that a kick?Of course, I'm thankful that my labs
and routine doctors visits are covered by Kaiser.

However, the tests I've had done within this past year, the very ones proving that I do
not have allergies are all out of pocket expenses for me. Medicare didn't cover a
one. And, to think, for all these years I've stated I DO NOT HAVE ALLERGIES!, I
have been chemically injured! Well, I'm down a bunch of bucks, but I've got results to
prove that, son of a gun, I do know my own body!!!!! Well, at least regarding that aspect.

I have said down through the years and I'll say it again, When the lid blows off the
flavors and fragrance industry, it will make the tobacco industry look like small potatoes.

Of course, there are research dollars needed to PROVE what we all know to be fact. Not just from
our own lives, but from research done by others in Europe and Japan, as well as by some brave
souls in the USA. But so far, research takes money and the flavors and fragrance industry has
a very strong lobby . . . and you figure it out.

So the bottom line is: People exposed to the petrochemically derived flavors and fragrances get sick.
If in school, and they are students, their education is hampered; if they are teachers or other
school personnel, their careers are adversely affected, as well as their health. IF they are in the
healthcare industry, or a law office, or a government agency, . . . well, they can have their
working lives made miserable for them, and it is not considered discrimination, nor harassment.
And, if they are newly employed, they can be fired at whim. It becomes a vicious cycle and yet,
it doesn't have to happen at all. Just keep petrochemically derived fragrances out of all public
areas. Especially, healthcare facilities and retirement residences. There ARE safer alternatives.

      Blood Pressure and Kidney Disease
Interestingly, the mainstream medical doctors attribute my renal failure to hypertension, yet,
aside from my internist and GYN, the Kaiser Oakland system doesn't seem to get it. Get it
that their highly scented facility -- everything from the restroom air "fresheners" to the
cleansers they use before visiting a patient, to highly scented staff, patients and visitors -- puts
ALL patients in harm's way. And that is especially true for the already chemically injured,
renal failure patient. Me! And millions of others like me. WHY are you trying to kill us off?

Petrochemical derived fragrances adversely affect the cardiovascular system and in my case, as with
so many others, that causes a spike in my blood pressure! And they say: Blood pressure
causes kidney disease. Fragrance chemicals do cause spikes in blood pressure. When will they
GET IT?!? Or maybe they do, and they are happy about that because they can push more drugs. -- barb

      Blood test bruises?
I use Traumeel to fade the bruise. I also use it to releive the aches as it is both an
analgesic and an anti-inflammatory . . . and I've had no adverse reactions to it at all.
Interestingly, the nephrologist states to save blood vessels. Also interesting is that thus
far, there is one man and one woman at Kaiser who haven't left me bruised, but blood
tests elsewhere so far are always free of brusing.

the cause of this disease is not known, but some cases may be inherited and others may
          be triggered by an infection."
Why is it that everyone is quick to hide behind the word "Unexplained" or state that the
cause of a given disease is "not known" and yet never, but NEVER, look at the proliferation of
petrochemically derived flavors and fragrances? Now one can do one's best to avoid products
with petrochemically derived flavors -- including avoid using pharmaceuticals -- but one is
hard put to protect oneself from petrochemically derived fragrances. Those toxins are made to
volatilize readily and become one with the air we all must breathe. And as our respiratory systems
are highly efficent devices for drawing those toxins into our bodies, we become users of fragrances
even if we have our God-given sense not to use such artificial products on our bodies.

"... Professor Malcolm Alison, a research pathologist working at both Imperial Cancer and
Imperial College School of Medicine, said:
' "Our laboratory experiments showed the presence of cells in the kidney that came from
bone-marrow stem cells, but we then went a step further and proved it can actually
happen in the human body. This research matches other recent studies showing how
bone marrow cells may also develop into liver, nerve and muscle cells - not just blood cells.' ..."

      • Steroid treatments for kidney failure
I've been prescribed Prednisone for MCS symptoms in the early 1990s and I had adverse
health events, which I'm not inclined to want to repeat. A nephrologist scoffs and mocks! But,
for those of you who are interested in trying the drug approach, here are some links-- barb

        • Glomerular Diseases Fact Book
" ... Treatments involving steroids or other immunosuppressive drugs appear to help
some patients by decreasing proteinuria and improving kidney function. But these
treatments are beneficial only to a minority of those in whom they are tried, and some
patients experience even poorer kidney function as a result of therapy.
          [Emphasis
added.] ACE inhibitors may also be used in FSGS to decrease proteinuria. Treatment
should focus on controlling blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels, factors that may
contribute to kidney scarring. ... "
Now, take a patient who is already living with the effects of chemical injury and I ask you,
WHY would a nephrologist even suggest steroid treatement . . . especially in a patient who has
already had an adverse reaction to Prednisone when being treated with it for lung symptoms of
MCS? Yet, that is exactly the treatment suggested to me. Horrors. -- barb

Petition 99P-1340 requests that the FDA do the work it is supposed to do to protect public
health. The US FDA does not even require its alert on all fragrances released to market
without substantiation of safety. Analyses show that fragrance you buy, described as
various flower essences, are really petrochemically derived. Those fragrances should
carry the FDA's required: 'WARNING: The safety of this product has not been determined.'
